Canada Extends Multiyear Immigration Level Plans
In a world where western countries are increasingly closing their doors to immigrants, Canada is taking advantage of this opportunity to welcome more immigrants into the country. Canada’s immigration plan for 2019 and 2020 will now be extended into the year 2021 thereby providing an avenue for the arrival of up to 1.3 million new permanent residents.
These changes were made public in the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)’s 2017 report to Parliament on the 31 October. The report which coincides with the first anniversary of IRCC’s original multi-year levels plan provides a guide on Canada’s immigration plan in 2018 to 2020.
By increasing the time and extending the target for another year, about 1.3 million immigrants will be welcomed through different economic, family and refugee immigration categories between 2018 and 2021.
The 2019 and 2020 target which is originally set for 330,000 and 340,000 respectively has now been raised to 330,800 and 341,000. According to the statement by Canada’s minister of immigration, refugee and citizenship, Ahmed Hussein, the plan will enable Canada to welcome more talented workers and bring in the expertise which the Canadian economy greatly needs.
According to him, “The problems of the aging population and declining birth rate which are the major challenge facing Canada today could be solved by economic migration. The federal Express Entry economic system and Canada’s Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) plays a very crucial role in this economic migration as they would direct the economic migration program and expand the number of admissions offered through each program in 2019.” He added.
Meanwhile, the PNPs would be responsible for providing about 255,100 candidates in four years, this amount to nearly 19 percent of the total 1.3 million admissions over that period. The remaining 60 percent of the 1.3 million new permanent residences would have to arrive through other economic class programs such as Atlantic Immigration Pilot and economic immigration programs administered by the province of Quebec.
